First and foremost, I’m a feminist. Second, I’m a filmmaker. As a filmmaker my goal is to agitate, reverse, and even transcend prescribed gender roles. Nothing gets me more worked up than the constraints of heteronormativity. In addition to gender issues, I have an interest in the sexual oppression of women. I aim to articulate this suffering in a fierce and unapologetic, yet still entirely productive way. I love pushing the boundaries and making people uncomfortable, as long as it makes them think. A handful of directors have had a profound influence on me, those being Catherine Breillat, Takashi Miike, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Todd Haynes, John Waters, Jim Jarmusch, and David Lynch. However, just looking at that list tells you how few successful women there are in the industry. My life’s work is to change that.

I recently graduated from the University of Texas with a Bachelors of Science in Radio Television Film. I have interned at the Austin Film Society and worked on many local productions here in Austin, Texas. When I’m not filming or feministing, I’m deejaying at the college radio station, 91.7 KVRX. I host a community programming talk show called Lip Service that focuses on women, gender, and sexuality. I’ve also recently taken up the art of pole dancing and I train with the lovely Mary Kay of Brass Ovaries. In my free time (which is rare) I like to read, write, educate myself, and sometimes daydream about my future dog children.

I’m always looking to jump into new and creative endeavors. Please contact me at zoja@zojaulesoo.com if you are looking to collaborate or need assistance with an upcoming film project.
